when writing in openoffice2.4, the space bar sometimes doesn't push text along to create a space, but overrides the text and deletes following text.

Asked by Rick Pratt

I'm writing a cover letter for my resume update. As I edit it, I place the cursor in a space between two words, and start to insert more text. But instead of pushing the text along to accommodate the new words, I find that I'm actually overwriting the existing text instead. What's up with that?

Normally the Insert key on the keyboard toggles you between insert and overwrite mode. So try pressing the Insert key and see if the overwriting changes to inserting. If it does not, there may be something wrong with your keyboard mapping.

Look in the status line. It will say 'OVER' or 'INSRT' to indicate which mode you are in.

If this solves your problem, please mark the question as Solved

OK, that worked, but there's another problem that just popped up. The
Caps Lock key seems to be working in reverse. When I activate it, and
the light comes on, it is in "normal" mode. When I toggle it off, and
the light goes out, it writes in Caps. This is an almost new system,
with a new Dell keyboard & mouse, and it has worked fine since I got it
3 months ago. Any ideas?

Thanks for listening,

Rick Pratt

Are you sure you are not pressing the shift key?
The shift key does the same as the caps lock key but it doesnt stay in caps when you stop pressing it.

Yes, I'm sure I'm not just pressing the shift key. As a matter of fact,
the caps lock light is on right now, as I'm typing this. Not like it's a
major problem - it's easy to adjust to - but I wonder if it's a sign of
more serious problems, maybe a bug or a malfunction. It started
happening yesterday around the same time as my (self inflicted) problem
with the insert key.

I wouldnt say its a bug, more than likely something wrong with the keyboards configuration.
Have a look in system>preferences>keyboard and check if there is anything weird.

There doesn't seem to be any control setting for the caps lock key in
system>pref>keyboard panels. It's not a big problem, I'll just live with
it.

If the caps lock is wrong way round in both OpenOffice and when typing here in Launchpad Answers then it in not just an OO problem but either an Ubuntu wide problem or a computer malfunction.

I suggest you mark this question as Solved and ask a fresh question about your caps lock problem.

Thanks Tony Pursell, that solved my question.

And now, for some reason, the caps lock seems to be working fine. I had restarted the computer earlier (for another reason), and it seems to have cleared the caps lock problem, too.

Thanks,

Rick Pratt
