OpenOffice Spreadsheet number formatting

Asked by lnthomp

Is there a way to make the number in a cell conform to engineering format? i.e. 12.235E+6 instead of 1.224E+7, or 124.654E-3 instead of 1.247E-1. Exponents of 10 should be divisible by 3.

Hello, You can use Scientific format number, type your number, and choose Fromat - Cells

Go to number tab - Scientific, chooes the format ...

if you want to edit the format, look at format code ...
There's should be a format like 0000,0E+0

Just set it as you want ...

For example, if you want 12.235E+5 instead of 1.224E+7, you just need to change the format to 00000,0E+0 ...

Hope this helps ^-^

Thank you, that does work for fixed numbers or after a result is found, as long as the result doesn't change later. I am hoping to find a way to generically make a formula result displayed as ###.###E+xx with xx always being divisible by 3

Hello, please give me the example ....

If you want to format like ###.###E+xx , just change the format like 000.000E+00

Ok, start with, lets say, 50 milliwatts. I would like to see that displayed as 50.000E-03. If I multiply that by 10, I would like the result to look like 500.000E-3 (500 milliwatts). If I multiply again by 10, I would like the result to look like 5.000E+00 (5 watts). Continuing to multiply by 10 repeatedly would produce 50.000E+00 (50 watts) -> 500.000E+00 (500 watts) -> 5.000E+03 (5 kilowatts) -> 50.000E+03 (50 kilowatts) -> 500.000E+03 (500 kilowatts) -> 5.000E+06 (5 megawatts) -> 50.000E+06 (50 megawatts) -> 500.000E+06 (500 megawatts) -> 5.000E+09 (5 gigawatts)
