Folder for templates for all users

Asked by AnandRan

I have an "Admin" account and a user account on my laptop. I want to create a template repository for all the templates that are available on OpenOffice.org on my laptop so that all users have access to them.
How do I do this? The instructions on OpenOffice.org state that I should extract the templates to "%OpenOffice.org%/user/template" directory. Where is this on the file system? My Unix is rusty and I vaguely remember that a "%" in a path means something.
I have searched on Google without success.

If you want all users to access your templates, you put them into:

/usr/lib/openoffice/share/template/<lang>, where <lang> is your language code.

You may also use ~/.openoffice/user/template/ for your own (non-shared) templates.

Thanks Markus Thielmann, that solved my question.

Another related question - I cannot simply click and drag the templates into the folder detailed in the resolution.
The system reports that I do not have permissions to to do this.
So, it is apparent that I have to use a Terminal session to accomplish this task.
What are the steps to complete?

Press Alt-F2, insert "gksudo nautilus" and after filling in your password you're using nautilus with root permissions. As always: Be carefull when deleting, there's no warning left. If you copy the files, make sure you give read permissions to the other users (right click->properties->permissions).

Can you help with this problem?
