toolbars in open office are blank or have underslashes

Asked by Barry

On the toolbar where it says: file edit view etc... there are no words, only lines. Any place there should be words, there are only dashes. If I click where the word file should be, the menu pops down but there are no words on it, only lines (dashes). I've re-installed open office and the problem is not corrected.

I think this is a video driver problem. go to System → Administration → Software Sources click on the Updates tab, then check the box for Unsupported updates (intrepid-backports). after you've enabled the backports update your ubuntu software from a terminal with the commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

you may need to reboot. after that go to System → Administration → Hardware Drivers and enable any restricted drivers you have available.

Please check which theme are you using from menu System → Preferences → Appearance [ Theme ] Tab

Then try to install the OpenOffice related style package for example

sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-style-crystal

Below the installable OpenOffice styles:

openoffice.org-style-andromeda - Default symbol style for OpenOffice.org
openoffice.org-style-crystal - Crystal symbol style for OpenOffice.org
openoffice.org-style-default -
openoffice.org-style-hicontrast - Hicontrast symbol style for OpenOffice.org
openoffice.org-style-human - Human symbol style for OpenOffice.org
openoffice.org-style-industrial - Industrial symbol style for OpenOffice.org
openoffice.org-style-tango - Tango symbol style for OpenOffice.org

To install all OpenOffice style:

Open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(if the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-style-*

Hope this helps

I had the same problem. I fixed it by disabling visual effects. System>Preferences>Appearance>click the Visual Effects tab and select None. Mine was set to Normal and everything is fine now after is changed it to None.

I must mention that I am also using version 2.4 for the above fix. I don't know if this also works for 3.0 because I don't have that version.

One more piece of info I might add: I have a proprietary nVidia accelerated graphics driver (version 96) installed for my video card. The driver is required to enable desktop effects. I don't know if there's a connection.
