How to connect database through java

I am in programming with java.I need to connect with a database and for that I have downloaded OpenOffice.org Database. Now how do I configure the driver for jdbc-odbc connectivity through java. Will it already available in my computer or should I do something else. I have tried a program for database connectivity but failed.Please help.

Sql databases are native to linux/Unix and much better/easier to use? I'm sure OpenOffice Base is based in sql but i'm guessing that in order to deal with stuff from Microsoft's Access it's probably had to compromise and have some unwieldy stuff cludged in.

I have tried to connect OpenOffice.org DataBase through MySqlODBC.It fails while usng JAVA. What I have to do while using ODBC.Can I get if im using JDBC.
