There is a lot of help available. For starters, try

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOoAuthors_User_Manual/Getting_Started/Getting_Started_with_Math

For more, got to

http://documentation.openoffice.org/

and search on 'Math'

Have fun!

If you have just installed Ubuntu, you may not have the Math package installed. I think it is left off the CD to save space.

If you go to Applications > Office and cannot see 'OpenOffice.org Formula' then go to Applications > Add/Remove, search for 'Math', click on the tick box by 'OpenOffice.org Formula' and then click 'Apply Changes'
