Minolta Color PageWorks Printer not working

Asked by Pete Higgins

I installed my Minolta Color PageWorks PS printer via the parallel port (Device URI:parallel:/dev/lp0) using the drivers in UBUNTU 8.10. The wizard detected the printer correctly as a Minolta Color PageWorks/Pro LPT #1, and install the “Minolta Color PageWorks/Pro L Foomatic/foo2zjs [en] (recommended)” drivers.

When I tried to print a test page, it printed "JZJZ@ZZ" in the upper left hand corner of the first page and then started spitting out page after page, occasionally printing one or a few characters in the upper left hand corner of each page.

I have a dual boot Windows XP MCE/UBUNTU machine, so I installed the printer using the default XP drivers and the test page printed correctly. (Verifies the printer, cable and parallel port are working)

Can anybody suggest what I need to do to get this printer working in UBUNTU 8.10?

I installed it as a “Lexmark Optra Color 1275 Foomatic/Postscript [en] (recommended)” and it seems to work perfectly. Then I hooked up my NeatGear PS-101 print server and changed the Device URI in printers.conf (sudo gedit /etc/cups/printers.conf) to match the IP address of the print server (DeviceURI lpd://192.168.1.150/L1) and everything still works. Wish I could get Postscript drivers for XP.

If anybody knows why the default Minolta PageWorks driver doesn't work please pass it along.
