Why you don't install OpenOffice also into your Windows computer...
http://www.openoffice.org/ to keep your document into the OpenDocument format http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument

By the way you can also save them into proprietary .doc format using OpenOffice.

To get best document font compatibility also install the msttcorefonts Ubuntu package... on your Ubuntu.

To install this fonts please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Hope this helps

Hi Mayan;

After typing a document in OO 2.4 select File-->Save As... At the bottom of the screen you'll see two text boxes. One is labeled "Location" and the other one is labeled "Filter." Type the desired file name without an extension in the Location text box. Then open the Filter box by clicking on the down arrow on the right side of this text box and scroll down. Select "Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP (.doc)" as your filter. This will save your document as a "windows" doc file that anyone can open from any Windoze computer. I hope this helps.

i don't see "location" and "filter" at the bottom of the screen. i only see these selections: "browse for other folders" and "file type" under which are 2 boxes, the 1st is a shaded box labeled "edit filter settings" and the other is labeled "save password"

Click on the triangle next to "File Type" and choose from the drop-down list. mhumm2 suggested "Microsoft Word 97/200/XP", so use that.

That will save your file as a .doc file.

I usually set the defaults to automatically save OpenOffice stuff in M$ formats. Fairly easy to do

Just Open any OpenOffice app such as Writer and look along the menus in the top bar. Usually setting/preferences/options are in Edit but in Ooo they're in Tools (like Windows). So;-
Tools - Options
brings a pop-up box. Just expand the 'Load/Save' by clicking on the + and click on 'VBA Properties' and tick all 6 boxes. Now go to 'Microsoft Office' and tick all 8 boxes. Now go to 'General' and notice at the bottom the 2 drop-down boxes beside each other? Click on the one beside 'Text Document' and change it from 'OpenDocument Text' to the one above which is 'Microsoft Word 97/2000/Xp'. Now change the 'Text Document' to Spreadsheet' and change 'OpenDocument Spreadsheet' to 'Microsoft Excel 97/2000/Xp' (not the template one). Finally do the same for Presentation and you'll never have to worry about being incompatible again :)

Also good to encourage people to use OpenOffice anyway, it's much better, has less security problems and it's free ;)

Good luck and welcome to Linux Communities :)

i was doing fine following your instructions until i went to "general" and cannot find at the bottom the 2 drop-down boxes beside each other, as you have described. the selections i see are: "help" with a few items under it; "open/save dialogs" and under it is a box labeled "use openoffice.org dialogs"; "document status" with 1 item under; and "year(two digits." i tried to click "open/save dialogs" but it does not work. where do i go from here?
