In Writer, go to "Tools", "Options", "Language Settings", "Writing Aids". Under "Available Language Modules", put a tick into the box next to "OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus".

HI,
In OO Writer, navigate TOOL - LANGUAGE - THESAURUS (You can change the language to English (USA) or something else that you like).
I've done with the OO 3.0 and found the synonym of the word "stupendous" is "prodigious".
Note: you can use the Ctrl + F7 for short-cut.
Hope this can help you
Regards,

In Writer, Tools, Options, Language settings, Languages, where it says "Default Language for Documents" which Language module are you using? Is there a tick and the letters ABC in front of it?

Why you don't install OpenOffice also into your Windows computer...
http://www.openoffice.org/ to keep your document into the OpenDocument format http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDocument

By the way you can also save them into proprietary .doc format using OpenOffice.

To get best document font compatibility also install the msttcorefonts Ubuntu package... on your Ubuntu.

To install this fonts please open a Terminal from the menu Applications → Accessories → Terminal and type:
(when the system ask you a password give your user password, you will not see nothing when you type it, then press enter)

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Hope this helps
