connection problem between computer running odp file and projector

Asked by Guy

Since changing over to Ubuntu from Microsoft, I have had problems in getting the projector to connect to the computer to screen odp presentations. The normal procedure is to make the physical connections, turn on the computer after the projector and then use F5 to help get the image on the computer screen and projector screen. Often it takes me a few goes, including restarting both computer and projector before it works - but I don't know then, why it has worked.

Usually after both computer and projector are turned on, the projector screen will flash up 'searching', then the Ubuntu logo falshes up for a second - followed by a blank screen. Even after waiting a minute or two both screens remain blank and no amount of pressing FN F5 helps. So I switch off and restart both computer and projector and after about the third try everything works fine - but when it is very frustrating. Any ideas on how to make it work first time?

Have you tried switching the computer on first before connecting the projector?

Also i was wondering what package you were using to do the projections? Can you try updating it? Try using Synaptic Package Manager;-

System menu on the top taskbar - Administrator - Synaptic's near the end

First click the 'Mark all Updates button' and then 'Apply'. After its finished all that (there are probably quite a lot of updates there) please use the Search button to look for 'projector'. I found 3 that might be relevant;-

openoffice.org-presentation-minimizer
resapplet
freevial

perhaps also ...

prosper

I was wondering which of these you use (or perhaps some other). Perhaps it might be worth re-installing them and then updating again (if the 'Allow' button doesn't light up then you already have the latest update.) Resapplet if the projector needs an input of only 1024by768.

It sounds like it is close to working perfectly already which is pretty impressive. The problem is in how to get it completely right.

Good luck with this

Thanks Tom. I've tried both starting the computer first and the projector first. All my updates are current and all the projector programs you mention are on my system. Ironically, Last Sunday I started up the whole thing first time, no troubles. So i'll see what happens when I try it tomorrow!

I've got my fingers crossed for you today.

lol Rolando, don't worry about sepling mistooks and typos. I keep shaking my keyboard upside down but still somehow wierd garbage appears to block certain keys from working. I dont know how paper-clips get in there, the only ones i use these days are on the internet for emailing!

Brands and version numbers might well help
Good luck both and regards from
Tom
