I was, myself, curious about OpenOffice.org3 a few weeks ago. After searching diverse forums for help on how to install that version I came up with the following advice which then did work for me under Intrepid Ibex.

(1) visit the OpenOffice.org website as a sudo user;
I suggest for a start on advice from there...:

Re: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co. -
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6088&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=deb+local+install

(2) Do read that advice, it and the links it provides actually explains all else rather well. As for downloading the needed installation files, see...:

http://download.openoffice.org/other.html

For use with Ubuntu you would want to use the version marked "Linux deb" or "Linux 64 deb" for the 64 version.

It might be of help to you to note that the Firefox browser's Download location can be personalised. I let Firefox always download to "/home/(my_sudouser's_name)/Desktop/Downloads".

The advice given at that OpenOffice.org Forum and the links provided there should be all you need to get the version 3 to get installed.

Hope this helped. 8)

Probably the easiest way to install OOo-3.0 is from launchpad PPA. You will just have to make an addition to your sources.list and then update

Simple Guide is here

Hope this helps

It should be as simple as adding:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main
to your 3rd party repositories. (via synaptic for example) and checking for updates and applying those.

I have tried to add
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu hardy main
also tried
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ppa/ubuntu hardy main
to 3rd party repositories. (via synaptic)

and add the key from openoffice.scribblers
in the authentication

but I could not see a new openoffice 3. No update icon show up.. openoffice still 2.4
