I am trying to retrieve an item I discarded in the word program by mistake

Do you mean you closed without saving, or you deleted a previously saved file? If it's the first one, I'm not sure we can help you, but if it's the second one, you can use e2undel to restore your files (you need to use sudo apt-get install e2undel at the command line. It will ask for your password, you don't see anything when you type it, but it is being entered, don't worry)

Note: Just realized e2undel doesn't work on ext3, which means you may be out of luck.
