Pictures do not open in word-processor

I have successfully installed the 8.10 upgrade....In Open Office word-processor when I click onto "Pictures>file> pic.'
what opens up in the page is just the box outline and a small icon top left corner...not the pic itself which of course I wish to see....The same JPEGs open no problem at all in ABIWORD ...but NOT in Open Office...Will you please advise what I must do ...Thank you.

Is the checkbox "Display : Graphics and Objects' checked ?

you can find it in Tools->Options->OpenOffice.org Writer->View
