I dont know if openoffice 3 is in the repos or not but you can always download a pre-packaged .deb from openoffice.org

Open office will not be made available in the standard repositories. In time it will find its way in the the backport repository. If you do not want to wait, you can download it from the Opernoffice.org website and install the .deb.

You should remove the current version before installing the new version.
From synaptic remove openoffice.org-core

Then you can install the .deb you download from OO.o

kavindu, wyatt is right. just download the .deb file from openoffice, remove ooo2.4 and install the file. just extract the .deb file. cd to the location into the folder "DEBS", and install thru sudo dpkg -i *.deb once inside the extracted folder with all the .deb packages you've downloaded. then cd to another folder (called, "desktop-integration") and execute the same command. that's it.
