Is there a filter or something that allows Open Office Spreadsheet to open MS Excel format .xlsx?

Okay, I found out if I saved it and right ckick it then chose open with.. and chose Open Office it opens. I have to change my association ( which program opens which file.

I have a password protected xlsx. When I try to open it with OpenOffice it crashes or displays a list of a lot of file formats. The closest one was Office 2007 Excel binary but it doesn't work. Suggestions?
