Please explain more about what you are doing.

What options are you using in OOo writer?

Why do you want to save images in formats that you cannot view?

I import a word document where I have previously put an image (e.g., my signature). When I try to save it, the system offer the above mentioned options (MAP or SIP)

I dont understand your 1st questions: what do you mean as "options"?

What you are doing is right clicking on the image and selecting Image Map. (Am I right?.) This brings up the image map editor.

See - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_map - for an explanation of what an Image map is.

When you save in the image map editor, you are saving the image map, not the image itself. The image map contains details of links you have added to the image in your document. For instance, you could link the signature in you image to your personal home page.

If you want to save the image from a document, right click and Copy. Then in the GIMP, File > New and OK. In the new Image dialog, do Edit > Paste As > New Image (or Shift-Ctrl-V) and you will have your image in the GIMP.

Please let us know if this solves your problem.
