Calc chart displays row numbers on X axis

Asked by GeorgeBass

In Open Office Calc, I prepared 3 columns: Date, Goal, Actual. The date column was formated as date; the other columns were formatted as numbers with 2 decimal places. I highlighted all of the data, then clicked insert chart. I went through the chart wizard. Everything displays properly, except that the X axis displays row numbers, not the dates. How can I change this?

Thanks,
George

Hi George

Double Click the chart, Right click, select Data Ranges and check 'First Column as Labels'

If this solves your problem, please let us know.

highlight the dates column, as well as goal and actual.
click on data range (step #2)
put a check in the "first column as labels" line

First, let me thank you for your quick answer to my question. The problem revolved around incorrect data ranges, trying to enter text directly into the wizard when a spreadsheet cell reference was required, and not checking the 'first column as labels box.

It seems to me (coming from Excel), that some of the help and explanations provided with Calc are very brief, and use grammatical constructions and word choices that are puzzling to this American. Since it is (am I correct?) an American product, I would say that this portion of the application could use some polishing. I think that when a group has been working with development of a software product for a long time, they lose sight of the "newbie" user. This is, of course, only human nature. It's not possible to anticipate all of the ways a "newbie" can foul things up.

Respectfully,
George

I think you hit it in one.  There are newbie mistakes and expert mistakes.  The programmers would never consider doing X so they don't set up documentation about it.  There is a support forum for OO.org, where newbie input is appreciated.  http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/
I sometimes go there to solve my problems, and there are always people ready to help.

Hi George,

I'm glad you have solved the problem now.

I don't think you can call OpenOffice.org an American product. It is
the product of a international community. Sun Microsystems Inc (a
US company) are major contributors, although many of their
developers work in Germany. I suggest you look at

http://www.openoffice.org/welcome/credits.html

and

http://about.openoffice.org/

if you want to find out more.

Most contributors (like me) are volunteers from around the world (I
am in the UK). For many of us, US English is not our first language,
so this does result in the occasional strange turn of phrase to the
American ear.

This big advantage of our way of doing things is that we can all
participate and perhaps make a difference.

Thank you for using OpenOffice.org.

Tony
