how to type in kannada in open office?

Kannada is supported by OOo. You need to add the language pack for it.

Go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager
Enter your password when prompted
Click Search
Enter 'language-support-translations-kn' to search for
This will give you the 'language-support-translations' package
Right click on the little box to the left of it and select 'Mark for Installation'
A dialog box will appear asking 'Mark additional required changes?' Click 'Mark'
Click 'Apply'
A dialog box will appear asking 'Apply the following changes?' Click 'Apply'
Synaptic will then install the kannada language packages

In OpenOffice.org you will need to go to Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages to set kannada for the language to use. Or if you just want to use it for a single document, or even part of a document, click where the language is displayed in the status line for language options.

Sir,
 I repeated the procedure and it did not work. I am suing ubuntu 8.04LTS and openoffice 2.4.
The problem I am facing may not a general one, please guide me.
