Open Office Writer will NOT double-space lines; WHY?

Asked by wordsmyth

I have tried and retried to get Open Office Writer to double-space text AND spellcheck - without success. No wonder people stay with Miscrosoft .....!

Yes, I've done all that until I'm blue in the face, or whatever.
It STILL won't hold the setting - goes to some kind of triple or
multiple spacing. Have re-booted several times, to no avail. And a
non-working spellcheck is just NOT ON.
But thanks for the prompt ack.

For spell check you need to make sure you have it enabled in Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing Aids.

You will need OpenOffice.org Hunspell SpellChecker Module, some User-defined dictionaries and the option 'Check spelling as you type' set.

You will also need your default document language set Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages.

If you don't have the OpenOffice.org Hunspell SpellChecker, it can be installed using Synaptic Package Manager. Ask if you need help with this.

    Thank for the prompt response.
I'm using the latest Hardy Heron 8.4 with the Open Office.org suite
as supplied & have worked through all previous suggestions to solve
this bug, without success. I like everything about Ubuntu EXCEPT
this problem with OfficeWriter. Never experienced similar problem
with Microsoft, just up-and-away and no worries....

Did the advice for spell check help?

The double spacing problem is very odd. What style is showing in the format box in the Formatting tool bar. Is it 'Default'. If it is, press F11 to get the Styles and Formatting dialog, right click on Default, select Modify, select the Indents & Spacing tab and check the Line Spacing there. Is it Single? If it is not, then change it to Single.

Thanks again for your prompt response to my problem. It is
unprecedented in my experience with other sites and Linux
clearly has a committed Support team. Happy to report problem
solved with the space, re your advice. But the spellcheck
problem remains. It will neither Autocheck copy nor F7 check,
yet when I go to Writing Aids I find Hunspell & etc all marked
as installed. Now, if only this problem can be solved I'll be a
blissfully happy Linux user! I should add that I have Linux Mint
installed on another computer and have the same problem there
with the Spellcheck. So it goes ...

        Thanks again,

        Lee Harding

P.S. The Spellcheck in Abiword works PERFECTLY, but I prefer
Open Office if the problem can be fixed. And incidentally, I've
downloaded and re-installed the Open Office Suite twice, with
the same result ...on BOTH machines.

I'm glad the spacing problem is solved.

Turning to spell check again. Go to in Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages. Under 'Default languages for documents' do you have a language selected for 'Western', or is it 'None'?

You have to have a language selected for spell check to work.

    Hi Tony - again !

Done! Success! Problem was : English Australia is not supported,
even though it's on the list. I switched to English U.K. and voila!
The Spellcheck works! I trust this omission will soon be fixed, for
the sake of our colloquials. Also, it would be helpful if an error
message replaced SPELLCHECK COMPLETED when the wrong language has
    been selected .....

One last request: I've tried many solutions, but could you please
explain how I can get CONSECUTIVE PAGE NUMBERING in Footer?
So far, though I always mark the page position numbering on the
RIGHT, it appears on the LEFT of the page. And when I try entering
consecutive numbering via FIELDS, I always get Number 1...

Thanks again for your time and patience with this novice Linux
user. And my heartiest congratulations to the support team at Launchpad.

    Cheers,

        Lee Harding

Thank you for your congratulations to us at the Ubuntu support team. They are very much appreciated. Did you know that we are all volunteers?

Please can you post the question about Page numbering as a separate issue and mark this one as 'Solved'.
