Open Office won't let me Horizantally Center text, every time I try to format it, center horizontally is grayed out.

Asked by Gravatrax

I can't center anything horizontally, I can do it vertically. Even when I go to Format Pragraph and Select middle it doesn't do anything. This is a major hindrance, I am going back to windows sometime soon (hopefully) but I still have reports to do that require fully centered cover pages.

And some features don't even pop up at all, example; I'll click on plugins and doesn't do anything.

I do not understand what you are doing wrong. I just go to Format > Paragraph... the click on the Alignment tab and select 'Centre'. There is no 'middle' selection. Frames have a 'middle' alignment. Are you in Writer?

Can you please describe the document you have and tell me more about what you are trying to do.

Well basically I am trying to create a title page. Title pages need to be fully centered (as in the middle of the page). I can center text vertically but it won't let me center text horizontally. When I go to format > alignment> The only things that are "clickpable" is left, right, center (vertically), and justify. Top, Center (horizontally), and bottom are grayed out. And using the alignment tabs do not work at all. I even tried going to RIight Click > Paragraph Style > Text to Text/Alignment > Then Middle but it still does not do anything.

OK - to get text centered in the middle of the page, create a frame style like this.

F11
Click on the Frame Style Icon (3rd from left)
Right click on the 'Frame' style, select 'New'.
Name the new style 'MiddleOfPage'.
Select the 'Type' tab.
For 'Position' select 'Centre' to 'Entire Page' (or perhaps 'Page Text Area') for both Horizontal and Vertical.
Click OK

On the first page of the document, Insert > Frame.
Select the frame and apply the 'MiddleOfPage' style to it.
Type your text in the frame and size the frame as required, but keep it tight round the text.

Styles are the best way to go with any formatting in OOo. You can re-use a style anytime for the same formatting problem and any change your make to a style will be automatically applied to all objects that use it.

If this solves your problem, please let us know.

Tony
