remove "link to external data" from ods spreadsheet

Using many spreadsheets. Summary calculations (averages, etc.) are copied to another spreadsheet. At first I tried to use "link to external data" but changed my mind, I don't want to have to ship all the extra files so the one with the answers can update the links. But the cells that I originally set to "link to external data" now always bomb out when the spreadsheet is opened, they think they are supposed to find a link.

How do I remove the link?

Open the sheet that contains the links to the external data.
Select Edit->Links
From here you can use the "Break link" button to remove the external links.

I found that you may also need to go to each cell containing a link to an external sheet and delete the cell contents.
