odd screen when open openoffice word

Asked by Gottfried Hoffmann

When I open openoffice word from the shortcut on the desktop, the screen is full, the panel (top and bottom) vanishes, I cannot close the new document, and the screen is blinking and flickering.
I have to go to "view", click on "full screen". This resets the panel. Now I have to click on "full screen" that shows up in the right corner and that will finally resets the normal view and functionality.
I have openoffice 2.4.0 and Ubuntu 8.04
I am new to Linux and concerned that I may have unknowingly changed some settings.

Hello Gottfried,

I too experienced this and was able to solve it by deleting a hidden file in my home folder.

Go into your Home directory, press Ctrl+h to show all hidden files, find the file called ".openoffice.org2" and rename it by adding an "A" to the end of its name" so that it becomes ".openoffice.org2A".

Open OOo Writer and the problem should be resolved. OOo will generate a fresh ".openoffice.org2" file.

When everything works to your satisfaction, you can delete the file you renamed.

Cheers,
Andre

With all due respect, this issue is not solved. Removing the openoffice.org2 folder means deleting all personal settings and returning to the default settings of OOo. Completely resetting the OOo system is not fixing a bug.

The real questions are: what caused this specific problem and what can be done to correct it?

In my case, I imported templates from Word (.dot files), saved them as .odt and then marked one of them as the default empty page. Can this have been the root of all evil?

In my case, I only removed ~/.openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Writer.xcu to solve the problem.

To get more specific, I altered the file Setup.xcu in the user/registry/data/org/openoffice folder. The file can be opened in any text editor (back it up first!). Under the node definition for the offending app (i.e. look for '<node oor:name="com.sun.star.text.TextDocument">' for writer), there should be a window attribute prop (something like ' <prop oor:name="ooSetupFactoryWindowAttributes" oor:type="xs:string">'). Under that, there should be a value section that looks something like this: '<value>0,0,1600,1200;1;0,0,0,0;</value>' This value seems to be the cause of the problem. After renaming the Setup.xcu file, a new one was created and the problem was "solved." I coped the value line from the new file into the old file, then named it back (i.e. deleted the new one first), and the problem was fixed. Thus, it would seem something in that value setting is causing the problem. Unfortunately, I do not know what each of the numbers there means (I would guess window dimensions, etc.) but this was a little less drastic than getting a whole new .openoffice folder created.
