I assume that you are talking about OpenOffice writer. Go to the menu item Help>Help, or you can press F1 and type in the field 'Page Numbers' and it will bring up the help for page numbers in the index.

Try going to the "Insert" menu and adding a "Header" or "Footer" then add your page number in this field so it is added to every page and holds its place on the page. Are you saying that the page number is not appearing in a header/footer by default on your system (OpenOffice does not do this).
