OpenOffice 2.4 Window blank when try to Open a file

First time using Hardy OpenOffice in Ubuntu 8.04 Tried to open a file (pdf) from USB flash drive. It opened but with incorrect format then when trying to open again for another text file the 'Open' window is blank (just two white blank spaces within the window). Rebooting did not solve the problem.

Lovell,

I don't think Open Office can edit a pdf document, it can only export existing documents to pdf.
If you want to edit a pdf file, then try using 'pdfedit'.
