Password protect spreadsheet

Asked by kei-clone

I had a password on my excel file back on windows before I moved to openoffice. The password from excel isn't compatible now but I wish to know if there's a way to password protect my spreadsheet file while still maintaining it in a format compatible with excel.

kei-clone,

You can use the following option to make it compatible with excel:
File>SaveAs> Here you can see an option "File Type", select Microsoft Excel 97/200/XP (.xls)
I don't think that you can password protect it when you are converting it to Microsoft Excel compatible format. . .

Hello kei clone

From OO help:
All documents that are saved in OpenDocument format can be saved with a password. Documents that are saved with a password cannot be opened without the password. The content is secured so that it cannot be read with an external editor. This applies to content, graphics and OLE objects.

To turn on password protection:

Choose File - Save As and mark the Save with password check box. Save the document.

(Note : You Need to go to Tools/Options/OpenOffice.org/General and make sure that "Use OpenOffice.org dialogs" is checked. Now when I try and save (say using OpenOffice format) then you get the option to save with password)

Hope it helps

Bhavani Shankar.

OO is quite compatible - open format and all. It's MS that chooses to create problems. It's time MS starts to make compatible projects. Lets be sure we are pointing our finger at the problem, not those trying to solving it.
