Can you give us any more information?

Where were these files saved?

Were they on the drive you have installed Ubuntu onto?

What file format are these files in? (ie .doc .xls)

if you have installed ubuntu on top of the broken Windows Install using the default install options (ie formatting drive and creating new partitions) and the drive you have repartitioned was also where the files were stored (ie the default "c:\documents and settings\username\My Documents" location in a one partition default setup of MS Windows ) then I think you will not have much joy getting these files back.

The files were on my c drive, they are a combination of word and excel files. I simply put the ubuntu disk into my CD rom and the installation was automatic and did not give me a choice where it was filing it to. I have not completed the "install" on my desktop from ubuntu because I did not understand the partition questions. Please, is there a number I can call for someone to guide me through this process?

Apparently, the ubuntu disk that was given to me is safe and does not override windows, I would like to switch to this operating system from windows but how can I install and partition the drives so that I do not loose everything? Currently my windows system is not booting.

  Thanks

The help page at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot should help. It will show you how to dual boot, which will let you have Ubuntu and Windows. Seeing as your Windows partition won't boot, you can at least get your files off it before/if you decide to remove Windows.

Can you help with this problem?
