How do you embed fonts in PDF files made with OpenOffice writer?

Asked by cfraenkel

PDF files need fonts embedded into the file for printing.

There isn't any obvious way to do this in OpenOffice & the files are output without the fonts embedded, causing the files to be rejected by the printer.

It's a standard option in Acrobat - will force me to create all docs for printing on a PC.

Update: It appears PDFs made with NeoOffice on OS X embed the fonts in PDF files.

Hi

How are you printingt the files?

I created a PDF from a OO.o document, opened it in Evince (the default PDF document reader), printed it, and it printed...

I'd be interested if you send a OO.o document to your PC if it will print...

The script pdffonts can be used to see if your fonts are embedded. If your file name is file.pdf the from the command prompt type "pdffonts file.pdf". This will tell you what you already know -- your fonts are not embedded.

I too had this problem when creating a pdf for lulu.com. To get around it, I print first print to a file (this creates a Postscript file with the extension ".ps"). I then use the Postscript to PDF conversion script with several options. Again assuming your file name is "file.ps", from the command prompt type:
ps2pdf -dSubsetFronts=false -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dNOPAUSE -dBatch file.ps
I get a warning, but I also get a "file.pdf" with embedded fonts.
