problem with open office

Asked by Cruz

There is a problem with my open office when I'm entering text on any application, presentation, spreadsheet, or Word Processor. Every time that I hit the enter key then try to go back and delete what I just entered with the backspace key, the application crashes and sends me to a recovery mode.

Any ideas on who to fix it?

I just migrated form Windows Ms Word and I'm trying hard to learn linux, specialy, OpenOffice.

Thanks

If you can obtain a backtrace of it (see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace for help), you may consider to file a new bug. You have to provide additional information such OO version and Ubuntu release. Thank you.

I am not a full expert on linux - but have you tried using the package manager - removing the open office package and then apt-get installing it again. Perhaps there is a problem with the original installation and just needs a re-install. Also - have you run an update on your packages for patches etc. Editing your /etc/apt/sources.list file - uncommenting the # in front of security updates and running sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade- after all the packages have been updated then see if the application still crashes - if it does then I would recommned posting the details of the OO version and ubuntu releas info for a bug report.
hope this helps

Hi again,

Well, I removed Open Office 2.0.2 from Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and installed back. I
tried the applications, spreadsheet, word processor and presentation and I
got the same result.

This is the problem:

Step 1 – I'm drawing a box from Toolbars – Drawing, (this is in any
application).

Step 2 - I double click the object (rectangle, circle, callouts, basic
shapes) to enter text.

Step 3 – If I type some text without hitting the enter key for a new line
and use the backspace key to delete the sentence, then there is no problem,
but if I type some text and start a new line by hitting the enter key, then
try to delete it by using the backspace key the application crashes, even if
I type text after I hit the enter key.

I tried to put my cursor at the beginning of the sentences and use the
delete key and the same thing happens.

This only happens when I use drawing boxes.

Could the problem be my keyboard (it is the genetic keyboard)?

It is annoying but I will not give up and will continue to ask for help
until this bug is fixed.

It is a great system and I'm willing to invest time to master Linux and all
its application.

Thanks,

Cruz

Did you try with Edgy and the latest version of OpenOffice?

Try reinstalling OpenOffice from Synaptic (System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager) and see if that solves your problem.

Why am I having trouble with people who have MS Word not being able to open my Open office docs even when I save in Microsoft or .sxw. ?

Also, I tried to register with IRC with Gaim - it told me I was suspended!!! I've never used it before, how could I be suspended?
