Impress > Slide Show > Custom Animation does nothing

Nothing happens in Impress when I select Custom Animation from the Slide Show menu, regardless of whether or not an object is selected. I want objects in a single slide to appear one after another. How to...?

I should add that I have the same problem when I run the latest version of Open Office under M$ Windows XP SP2.

I figured it out myself: the task pane has to be visible. Otherwise nothing happens. (But shouldn't the task pane become visible when I select Custom Animation?
