pics placed in openoffice don't appear just a box that says graphic

When I place a pic in a document in OpenOffice, it does not appear; an empty box labeled graphic1, graphic2, etc is all I get.
I have tried both dragging images and using the insert method, but only empty boxes appears. Please help, this is a disaster.

If you save the file, close the file then reopen, is it ok.
