so, in the interests of trying to pay it forward - I am very new to Ubuntu, but had a year of SUN OS about 10 years ago

I think if you can search/find OpenOffice in the Ubuntu Software Center, you can have it install the components or full suite

I JUST did this today, and it worked for me

the latest version of open office 3.3.0 is available in downloads section of http://www.openoffice.org/ . you will get a tar.gz file and you will be required to install it manually.

The question I would ask, Ed, is why you need to replace LibreOffice with OpenOffice.org?

For Murali Krishna: I know where to find Open Office on the net & how to download it, the issue is how to install it in Ubuntu. I have a book on 11.10 & it says one has to first make a new repository then go from there. It is still not specific enough to do the job though.

One cannot just download an app then do an install in Ubuntu, unlike Windows. I am new to Ubuntu & I would like to get weaned off Windows.

I guess my best option now is to hope that the new version of Ubuntu, Precise Pangoline, due out sometime this mid-April may have the option for all of us to use Libre Office or Open Office. I have been using Open Office with Win 7 so I am familiar with it & would like to stick to using Open Office. With Windows, it is easy to install Open Office or Libre Office but not with Ubuntu.

Murali, if you have more info on this issue, please advise.

Thank you.

To David: I went to Ubuntu Software Center & searched for Open Office but it is not listed. How did you do it? I am using Ubuntu 11.10 which does not list Open Office.

Please advise if you have more info on this issue.

Thank you.

The answer to how you install a package in Ubuntu would be to look for a .deb package. This is the nearest equivalent to the .exe that you would get in Windows insofar as you can usually just double click the file and an application is called (usually Software Centre) to install it.

Just go to http://www.openoffice.org/ and click on 'I want to download OpenOffice.org' and it will probably offer you the .deb package based on the information your browser tells the web page, i.e Linux debian. However, you will usually get a .tar.gz file which is a compressed file (like a .zip file in Widows) that you need to open with Archive Manager to extract the .deb files and install them.

All new Ubuntu versions now have LibreOffice installed as standard. They have done since 11.04, so 12.04 (aka Precise Pangolin) will definitely have it installed.

What I don't understand is whether you *must* have OpenOffice.org, or you are happy to use LibreOffice which, to all intents and purposes, is functionally the same as OpenOffice.org. If you are happy to use LibreOffice, then there is no need to install it as it comes as part of the Ubuntu install.

why do you want openoffice? it's been dead for a couple of years now, since oracle bought out sun.
libreoffice is pretty much exactly the same as openoffice and has been updated with new features and bug fixes.

openoffice is no longer availalbe in ubuntu version after 10.04. if you installed 10.10, 11.04, 11,10, you can get libreoffice from the repositories. if you MUST have open office, you can download and install it yourself from the openoffice website. the instructions for install openoffice is exactly the same as for installing libreoffice. you can get instruction on how to manually install openoffice from it's forum. you have to do a search though. if i remember correctly, a user named hagar something or another posted instructions on this.

if you MUST know how to manually install openoffice/libreoffice, i'd suggest you download the deb file from the libreoffice site. instructions on how to manually install are given in the file. after you download it, click the deb file to open up the archive and click the readme file for instructions.
as tony purcell said, deb files are like windoze exe files and automatically install when you double click them.

Can you help with this problem?
