gutsy open office locks up whe inserting a gif graphic

Asked by Peter Johnson

I tried to insert a gif graphic in a document and as soon as I did open office locked up solid. I had to force quit. when I opened office again it brought up the recovery dialog. After it was recovered the same thing happened again. if I cancel the recovery and start with a new document it still locks up when a gif is inserted. If I click on help, even in a new blank document. it goes to the recovery dialog. Every time I open the office program it brings up the recovery dialog even though I have previously cancelled it. The gif is one that was created in GIMP and is saved on my HDD. The only other thing I had done in the document was to create a header and a single line of text. I had not saved it when it locked up since I had not really done any work on it yet. I have never tried to insert a graphic before but it seems pretty straight forward. click 'Insert'. select 'Picture' and click on 'From File', then locate your file on your hdd and click on it. As soon as it inserts the picture, open office locks up.

I sure hope that this does not mean I am going to have to go back to windows xp and ms word to create documents.

Thanks,

Torfinn

Strange, inserting a gif works fine for me. Do you have any more details? Can you insert other gifs, or is there something wrong with the gif?

Also, if your openoffice is stuck trying to recover the file, you might be able to clear its memory of the incident by closing openoffice (and the quickstarter) and then deleting the hidden folder ".openoffice.org2" in your user's home directory. I know this doesn't address the root of your problem, but it might fix the recovery dialog if that is annoying you.

Haven't tried another gif. this was one that I greated in Gimp from a scan with xsane. I will try with another gif and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks

Tried it with a gif that I downloaded from the internet and still the same problem. However I was able to copy and paste that gif into the document so I do not think that it was a problem with the gif. When I upgraded to Gutsy i just ran the upgrade from online. There were some errors reported but I do not think any of them were specific to open office. However I have downloaded the iso image, created the CD and installed it on another older system. I will try to reproduce the problem on that system. the CD install worked fine on that one but the 25 updates that tried to download and install via update manager had problems. I will report back here shortly.

Thanks,

Peter

Well. Yeah I guess it may be a corrupt install. did not notice anything wron until I tried to insert the gif though. The insert worked fine on the other system. So I guess I will run the install from the CD.

By the way. That system only has 256 mb of ram and seems to be incredibly slow with Gutsy runing on it. More so that with Feisty Fawn.

Hi,

openoffice 2.3.0 has a known problem with some themes, do you still have the problem when using the Human desktop theme ?

I have switched to crux but have the human icons. I just reinstalled Gutsy Gibbon from a CD. Open office still locks up when trying to import a gif. It also locked up when trying to add color to a font. Maybe I should go back to the previous version of Ubuntu. Or at least open office. Guess I will fire up the windows machine and do the work there since I no longer have a functioning version of open office. Still want to fix this problem though as I do not want to go back to windoze.

Note: when running the install from the CD there were no errors. Also did not encounter any errors with updates.

Solved the problem. The downloaded ISO was corrupt. I had to download from two other sites before I got a good image.

Thanks guys

Just an update. sorry I did not put this in earlier.

The Crux theme is the one I chose to use. This had been no problem in fiesty fawn but there I had made no other changes to it except to change the icon set to the human icons. After installing Gutsy I also changed the color to a brighter purple this is where I ran into problems. Any time I changed the color to the Crux theme open office would start crashing.

here is the work around that I figured out.

1 - Select the Human theme
2 - change the border to the crux border
3 - then select the color you wish to use
4 - Smile

By the way---The reason I got bad iso images was not due to the actual image on the sites being bad, but rather that there were several bad storms around the country om the might I downloaded and I am sure there was inteference the corrupted the downloads in transmission.
