How do I unprotect excel sheet without password?

Asked by etiksha goyal

I have an MS Excel document sheet which I am trying to modify in openoffice. However the sheet is password protected and I don't remember the password. Is there a way I can bypass password protection?

There are a few ways to do this -- password protection for modification is a farce, and cannot ever be implemented securely. Encryption yes, modification, no.

Save the file to an openoffice format, which is simply a zip file. Open this ods file with file-roller, then open content.xml

Search and replace (including quotation marks) "protected" with "none" (I had to use kwrite to open the content.xml file, as gedit crashed during find/replace).

Then save the content.xml, file-roller should prompt you to replace the one inside the zip file. Agree, then open the modified zip file in openoffice. This should be unprotected now.

File-roller did not work for me. I have had to use: unzip on terminal, then edit content.xml and zip to create .ods again. LibreOffice complained of bad format but recovered automatically with successfull results.

Archive Manager worked for me. I had to install Mousepad as everything else choked on the file. Even then it was a complete jumble, but using the find and replace command worked nonetheless. I was prompted to update the file and it is now unprotected.

I installed xmlcopyeditor from the repository which handles even large files easily. F11 does the same job as word wrap and makes the file easy to view and edit.

change the line protected=true to false, save and agree to the pop-up and your file will be rid of protection.
