The item has to be selected first, unfortunately.

So, drag out a selection that is more than 2 cells, then drag it back to one.

Now you can drag the cell.

Thanks, interesting, but as I suspected the simple operation is not possible.
A quick experiment with your suggested workaround seems to be ok as long as there's an empty contiguous cell, but if all adjacent cells hold data, things seem to get really scrambled - am I right on that?

No. This works for me just fine, even with adjacent cells containing data.

Ok, thanks, achieved it! BUT [for the benefit of anyone else looking at this] the sequence is:
Get cursor within cell, depress left mouse, holding left mouse down move cursor to another cell [adjacent cell highlights] then WITHOUT RELEASING LEFT MOUSE, return cursor to home cell. That cell can now be dragged.
