I find that the key marked Alt Gr acts as a compose key for me. E.g hold down Alt Gr and type a, let it go and type ^ and you get â. (That is a Welsh accented character, e.g I live near Cwmbrân). Try it out.

When I tried this it didn't work .When I hold down alt key and press a it opens the "table" tab in Oo.
I do not understand the Gr?

Insert menu ==> Special Character ==> Choose from the table that appears to
add the accented character.

Hi David

'Alt Gr' is a single key on my keyboard, to the right of my space bar. Perhaps you are on a laptop or netbook without space for these additional special keys.

Wolf Halton's method is good for the odd accented characters, but it will get tiresome for you if you are typing a lot in a language with accents (like most European langauges).

Another way, if you do not have a compose key is to use the Unicode code. Note that all the characters you see with Insert > Special Character have a code at the bottom shown like U+0177. You can user this code as follows:

Hold down Ctrl and Shift and type the letter u. You will see an underlined u.
Let go Ctrl and Shift and type the Unicode, E.g 0177
Hit return or Enter. You will get the Special Character. ŷ in this case.

Note that is you are in another application than OOo, like I am here, you can get the Unicodes from the Character Map (Applications > Accessories).

Hope that helps

Tony
