Asked by rdema19403

On my computer i just reformatted the hard drive and installed ubuntu 9.04 and then upgrade to 9.10 (32 bit) i cannot get open office to start up when i click on it to start it up their is a red horizontal line tha is on the screen when it gets half way through it disappears and the program never runs. When i go to applications scroll down to any of the open office products i see them all their but they all react the same way.
So i down loaded 00o_3.3.0Linux_x86 Install-rpm-wJRE_US.tar.gz and iam not really sure how to install it any ideas?

Hi

Your question raises questions! Why Ubuntu 9.10? There is a later LTS (Long Term Support) version 10.04.04 available or the latest development release (10.10). There is also another release (11.04) due out in a few days from now.

00o_3.3.0Linux_x86 Install-rpm-wJRE_US.tar.gz is not suitable. First of all it is for 00o version 3.3.0, and I doubt if that is the version with Ubuntu 9.10. It is also a rpm package so not built for Ubuntu which uses deb packages.

My suggestion would be to do a distribution upgrade to 10.04.04 or a full re-install with 10.10 (or 11.04 in a few days time), then go to Ubuntu Software Centre and install Java from there. If you install the OOo Base package, you will also get Java installed.

Hope that helps

Tony
