offline computer

Asked by Ed LeBlanc

I want to use my netbook as an offline word processor without the need for updates; is this possible? It will never be plugged online.
Thanks,
Ed

If you want to do this then you can just use Libre Office or other alternatives to type. Chrome OS also makes this possible if you install an offline web app from Online- Write Space

Hi Ed

Tell us what you have loaded on the netbook now.

If you install Ubuntu you will get the OpenOffice.org word processor as standard. For a netbook, without a CD/DVD drive, you would have to install from a USB stick. Do you have access to another computer to download a version of Ubuntu and create an install CD or USB on?

I have a Toshiba NB-205 that I have loaded Unbuntu (Not Netbook) version onto it with my external drive. Frustrated after hiccups in the Windows 7 starter OS I wanted to try a new more stable OS. My concern is: are the yearly upgrades necessary?
I am a student and want to keep my essays and other important works safe without the worry of them disappearing.
Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed

Ubuntu provides regular updates to fix minor bugs and security issues. They are desirable, but not essential unless you need a particular bug fixed. A new version of Ubuntu is released every six months but it is not essential that you upgrade. As long as your system works OK.

It is not very likely that a failure to update and upgrade will pose a risk to your work, but there are other risks that you need to consider, such a disk failure. I would always advise you to backup your work somewhere safe.

New versions of OpenOffice.org are released from time to time and incorporated in Ubuntu version upgrades, but I can assure you that backward compatibility with previous OOo versions is always very good - much better than with MS Word - so you have little to worry about there.

Hope that helps.

Tony
