Hi

This is easy. To subtract d6 from c6 and put the answer in c7, just enter =c6-d6 into c7.

If you copy and paste that formula into c8, it will be automatically changed to =c7-d7.

There is a lot of documentation on the OOo spreadsheet (Calc) in Help and at

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Calc_Guide

I guess I didn't explain this right I will try again Here is what i would like to do. I am trying to set up a way to track my monthly shortfall in rents and i would like to do this
        B C D E
     Month 1 total rent subtract - shortfall= input add + shortfall= input
Month 2 the answer into c in the answer into c in
     Month 3 month 2 month 2
And do this by just adding the shortfall or positive amount placed into d or e

There fore what i would like it to do is this

    B C D E
Month 1 2500 -2000 cash payed
Month 2 return 500 +300 shortfall fr month 1
Month 3 return 800 -500
Month 4 return 300 I am hoping to be able to see what is owed in back rents
I would like to put just the shortfall amount and have this automatically enter in colume C the following month. If this can be done i would appreciate knowing how am very new to using spreadsheets

that's simple arithmetics and is easy to do.

e.g. you want to do the following d1=a1+b1-c1

so you click on d1 then type "=a1+b1-c1" then press enter. simple, isn't it.

note that you have to enter values into a1, b1, c1, or have the result of some calculation in those cells (e.g. 15*35)

all formulas start with "=". if you don't enter the =, it is treated as a number or text

if you want to use values/cells from other rows, it's just as easy.

e.g. you want to do the following d8=(a2*b7-c4)/a17

you'd click and enter it exactly as you want the formula to be ... =(a2*b7-c4)/a17
