I'm a NEWBY to Linux, and need help with a downloaded file.

Asked by ekline51

I'm a NEWBY to Linux. Having said that, I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS [THAT much I know]. I downloaded an OpenOffice template in zip & odb formats. I've been a Windows/Office user FOREVER, and I don't have A CLUE what to do next. In Windows/Office, you could simply double-click a downloaded Excel template file & an Excel window would open with all of the template format... you would add whatever info you want... close... be asked if you want to save... and add later, if you wish. I LOVE how Linux is with Internet security & speed... but I'm so new & simply uneducated to utilize the template. Could anyone PLEASE help? Thank you, in advance, for any/all advice.

Best regards,
Rick Kline

Put the odt file in ~/Templates you can then right click in a folder and select 'Create Document' and then click your template

In spite of my being so uneducated, I appreciate your response.

then run:

mkdir ~/Templates

(note the T is CAPITALIZED), then put the file you have in that folder.

I guess I'm too stupid to do this. What, exactly, do you mean "run"? Ho do I do this? I don't have a clue what you mean.

press CTRL+ALT+T and copy the command I gave, then paste it into the terminal and hit ENTER. Copy the output and paste here as an update.

Thanks

ok then you have the folder, open your home folder and you will see the Templates folder, put the file in there. When you right click in a folder and select 'New Document' it will be present

Hi Rick

If the file you downloaded really does have a ODB extension, then it is a Database file, NOT a spreadsheet. Perhaps you ought to tell us what this template is for and where you got it from.

For a start, Ubuntu does not have the Database module installed as standard, so you may have to add it before you can work with this file.

Family Address Book, found at:

http://templates.services.openoffice.org/en/user/2323

and

http://buildzion.com/index.php/Family-Values/Family-Address-Database.html

FWIW... still struggling. I found the Templates folder under the Home folder.

Maybe THIS is the answer. I found another template from the same resource. It has an OTS file. I put that in my template folder & it WORKED. The one in question is an ODB file... Maybe THAT'S the problem...

The only problem is, it's a Family Budget template... not the Family Address template I was looking for.

I noticed that Tony Pursell commented, "For a start, Ubuntu does not have the Database module installed as standard, so you may have to add it before you can work with this file." I may need to deal with THAT issue, as well. But for now, I'm going to give it a rest & not lose any sleep over an address book. Thanks to all for your help.

Rick Kline
