OpenOffice Calc application crashes

Asked by Martti

Have anyone seen similar or know if fixes available to case where I see a lot and continuous application crashes
of OpenOffice Calc. I do have old laptop where I run Ubuntu 10.10, but only applications which are open at the
same time are Mozilla, Calc and file browser, so wonder could it be memory/ perf. of my PC. But earlier having
older version of Fedora where this issue was not seen.

I have never lost any unsaved data, but that recovery operation takes time (and is booring).

Wondering if re-install of OpenOffice or Mozilla would help ?

Use case is simple, after starting the PC I open browser and Calc sheet where I note some numbers. In few minutes
I note Calc to crach and after doing the recovery it is there again. And it can happen many times in same "session",
where I switch to browser and calc back and forth. When only browser is open no problems seen, but have not tested
with other OpenOffice applications.

Why do you think the web browser is related to this problem at all?

Does this happen in multiple spreadsheets, or is there just one spreadsheet file where this occurs?

It's *possible* that completely removing and reinstalling OpenOffice.org could fix the problem. One way to do this is in System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. Type "openoffice.org" (without the quotes) into the search textbox near the upper right corner of the Synaptic window, and then, for each item in the long list that has a check-mark, click on the check-mark and click "Mark for Complete Removal." Do the same for the packages called uno-libs3, ure, and mozilla-openoffice.org. There are other packages that are associated with OpenOffice.org that you may want to remove this way as well (see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org).

Then reinstall OpenOffice.org (or whatever part or parts of it you want, such as openoffice.org-calc). You don't need to manually reinstall all the packages you removed--if you install openoffice.org, or whatever specific OpenOffice.org applications you want (e.g., openoffice.org-calc, openoffice.org-writer), then the other packages will be automatically installed as needed.

If that doesn't work (honestly, it probably won't), then please feel free to post again.

I've added a link to a bug that seems like it might be someone else having this same problem. The bug report is not very complete, but it will probably become more complete, or get converted into a question.

I forgot to mention, in my answer above, to Apply the complete package removals in Synaptic, before performing the reinstallations.

Good point what I think as well, but I have seen crashes only happening when browser is open at the same time. No other "evidences" for this.

I don't know why, and I should know better the memory management, but why this "feel" that if there would be shared memory used this could be cause of it ????

Thanks Eliah for quick replay anyway.

If you need to know more details just let me know what command(s) to execute, I will copy-paste information here

Did completely removing and reinstalling OpenOffice.org fix the problem? Do you still want help with this issue?

About how often is Firefox open at the same time as OpenOffice.org? If Firefox is usually open when you're in an OpenOffice.org spreadsheet, then that would explain why Firefox is usually open when the crashed occur. On the other hand, if Firefox is open about half the time when OpenOffice.org Calc is open, and 90% of your crashes are when Firefox is also open, then there is a true correlation (which might or might not indicate that Firefox is a causal factor, but which would be worth investigating and might lead the way to a solution for your problem).

Generally speaking, different applications running at the same time do not share memory with one another[1]. Firefox and OpenOffice.org are no exception (though different OpenOffice.org applications may share memory with one another).

[1] Except in the case of shared ("dynamically linked") libraries used by both, which usually does not enable one application to destabilize the other.

Didn't yet remove and re-install openoffice, looked Synaptic and with you instructions should be easy manual task to do. Re-install maybe easiest with full package from openoffice pages ?

And I first create new calc file since original file had many worksheets (of history), but yes it happen with many files.

Will next try to remove and re-install OpenOffice, will let you know.

I do not recommend installing OpenOffice.org with the installers available on the website. It is better to use the Ubuntu packages available in Synaptic (and equivalently via other package management utilities in Ubuntu, like the Ubuntu Software Center, apt-get, and aptitude). If you use the version from the website, other software that depends on OpenOffice.org components may fail to recognize them and thus refuse to run or have errors, and you'd have to manually maintain it (i.e. you wouldn't get updates to it in the Update Manager).

As a last resort, you could try using the version from the website. I recommend trying other things first.

Still see crashes of Calc, I think my re-installing didn't worked since used the download new deb package (OpenOffice 3.3) from openoffice pages. Will re-remove and install again from Synaptic as proposed during next weekend.

Can you help with this problem?
