how to open MS word docs in ubuntu without word docs scrambling

How can I open all my microsoft word documents which contain text, symbols and images in a Ubuntu system. Presently, all these documents are on an external hard drive and when I try to open them with Ubuntu they open showing all the text shifted around, the images in different places from the original doc and things like arrows are in different places from the original doc. These are all word documents that I want to continue to work on or add to.

which word format are the documents in?

if it has the .doc extension, openoffice writer can open the files with 90% accuracy. meaning there might be some adjustments you have to make.

if they have the .docx extension, the current version can't open them. you'll have to wait for the new release of openoffice 3.3 or libreoffice
