how to Lock columns in Spreadsheet

Hello all, I'm using spreadsheet to maintain a grade book for my computer class. I would like to be able to lock the column with the student names in it so I can scroll over to add grades and still make sure I'm on the right line. I know there's a way to do it in office, but I don't want to use office, lol. Any ideas.

An example with Calc spreadsheet on OpenOffice 2.3 on Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10
If you want to lock vertically column A:
1) Select column A and B
2) From main Calc menu: open -> Window -> Freeze
