how to delete files in open office

Asked by peter youngman

I have read all the FAQs which do not help, I saved a file in OO,o Word 3.2, which I now want to delete. The file is in documents and is odt. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 for notebook. This is my first time with ubuntu so please excuse me if I am being thick, I can't find a delete button in Openoffice with the file open. Or in files and folders when the file is highlighted within docs, although there is a remove button when docs are highlighted which disappears when the file is brought up. Using delete on the keyboard in both files and folders and openoffice has no effect. Thanks for any help.

Use the places menu to find the folder in your home folder, you can then delete it there.

Thanks for your reply but I have already tried this. There is no remove option and delete key has no effect.
In places menu I can remove documents folder but that has no effect on the file which opens as usual and remains isolated from remove or del key.

Do you mean the one in the recent documents list?

I get to the menu Main menu in launcher, then office in menus, then click open office in items which opens a pop up which browses to places menu.

Is this the places menu you are talking about?

I think the notebook ubuntu is different to the desk top.

Why don't they just have delete in the file menu in openoffice?

Can you please give a screenshot of what you mean. Use imageshack or photobucket (or similar) to host the file so we can see what is going on

Thanks

Sorry I am new to Ubuntu I can also find the file by file menu in the top tool bar then open file this is headed Open file and shows documents in the places on the left, In this screen the remove only works on the documents folder (does not remove the file) after clicking on one of the other items then back to documents.

When you say imageshack is that part of the installed software if so do I get it from the software center. This computer has only just been changed to Ubuntu.

did you try to delete it using nautilus (file browser)?

Applications menü -> System -> File Browser then navigate to the place where the file is stored and do a right click on the file. then choose "move to trash".

sorry, wrong location of the file browser.

From the Main menu choose:

Applications -> System Tools-> File Browser

then do the rest as described above.

I have just reinstall ubuntu 10.10 for notebook. Have found a solution. Click on trash in the launcher tool bar highlight document on the places menu and then drag file to the rubbish bin where it can be deleted.

I still don't understand why files can't be deleted with in Openoffice.

Thanks for all you inputs

If you want to delete files from within OOo you can go to Tools > Options... > OpenOffice.org > General and under 'Open/Save dialogue boxes', check 'Use OpenOffice.org dialogue boxes.'

You will then find that if you do Open or Save it is possible to right click on and file name and get a Delete option.

Personally, I do not like these OpenOffice.org dialogue boxes. I also do not like the fact that if you use this Delete option, the file is permanently deleted. It is not moved to Trash where you can restore it, if you have made a mistake. (I have filed a bug for this non-standard behaviour).
