missing help in open office suite

Asked by Michelle Walker

I wanted to install the entire open office suite which seemed to have the applications I wanted to edit pdf files. I was looking for the wizard to create forms but the wizard in the word processor that was installed did not include it. So I un-installed all Open Office via synaptic manager and then reinstalled the entire Open Office Suite. It looks a little different but I like it better. But when I choose the 'help' button, I get a message to install 'openoffice.org-help-en-us'. But when I go to the Ubuntu software center, it's not there. In fact, the only Open Office I see is what's already installed, not matter where I look. What did I do and how do I get back the applications I need? I am using Ubuntu 10.04 and Open Office 3.2. Is Open Office in the software center different than the Open Office download right from the web because I still do not see the wizard I'm looking for?

if you add these repos:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu maverick main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/openoffice-pkgs/ubuntu maverick main

(If you aren't using maverick, substitute maverick for your release)

with:

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and add the 2 lines

Then run:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-help-en-us

Should be ok

I don't understand part of your answer. What is maverick? What are repos?
When I click on the links I have no idea what I'm looking at. And are you
saying that I should open a terminal and type gksudo gedit
/etc/apt/sources.list? What two lines should I be adding?

Sorry, I'm not understanding what you mean.

Thanks

Maverick is the codename of Ubuntu 10.10 and is the latest released version of Ubuntu. You can verify you are using Maverick by running:

lsb_release -c

If it outputs something else(like karmic, lucid or hardy for example), then change the lines to reflect this.

Repos (short for repositories) are the servers you install applications as well as your updates from. You can add extra repos which will give you access to a greater number of applications, one on that server are the help files you seek

You may also find it if you enable the proposed repository in the software centre as I just found out:

andy@D420:~$ apt-cache policy openoffice.org-help-en-us
openoffice.org-help-en-us:
  Installed: 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu1~10.04.1
  Candidate: 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu1~10.04.1
  Version table:
 *** 1:3.2.1-6ubuntu1~10.04.1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-proposed/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:3.2.0-7ubuntu1 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages

So it should be available to you without adding the extra server in the manner I named.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I haven't upgraded to 10.10 yet. 10.04 is my first
experience with Ubuntu. Maybe I should upgrade and see what happens.

Thanks
