Page numbering in openoffice -- doesn't count beyond 99

Asked by Loretta J. Williams

I am working on a document in openoffice that successfully placed the page numbers 1-99, and then began 10 for 10 pages, then 11 for the next set of pages. What do I do to get the manuscript to pagination correctly?

Weird. On my computer a 360-page-document is numbered just fine. ...looks like a issue with formatting, though: If you somehow restrict the space available for the page number to two letters - the result will look familiar to you

Thanks. The "somehow" is beyond me, I think! I'll play with figuring a way
to expand to three. But it's doing page 101 as 10, 102 as 10, 103 as 10,
etc.

What did you do to get the pages numbered? Perhaps if I get step-by-step instructions I can reconstruct the problem on my computer .

I opened up Open Office.org
Started the manuscript.
About 40 pages in, went to Insert.
Then to Fields.
Then to Page Number.
And so the numbers started appearing at the bottom of the page in the
correct order.

I wrote some more in that file, and I inserted sections from another file as
well.
When I printed it out, I discovered that it went from ...98, 99, 10, 10,
10,10,10,10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 11, 11,11,11,11,11,11.......

I can't figure out how to delete the numbers on all the pages, and start all
over again with numbering. And would that work anyhow?

Thanks for helping me think this through.

Hi Loretta

What you are getting is just the first two digits of the page numbers - 10[1], 10[2], 10[3] ... 10[9], 11[0], 11[1]...11[9]. Some sort of formatting problem?

Yes, that is what is happening. And I don't know how to stop that. This is
only my second week working with Linux, not Windows.

Hi Lorretta

Sorry not a very helpful comment - just saying what was already said. Do you have the page numbers in a header or footer? Are they centred in the header or footer? Also, do the numbers shown OK in the document and only get shortened when you print?

Well the number is centered in the middle of the bottom, but I never clicked
on header/footer. And no, the problem shows up on the screen as well as the
printout.

Hi Loretta

Try adding a Footer with Insert > Footer > Default. Put the page number in it with Insert > Fields > Page number. Centre it with the Centred button on the Formatting toolbar. See if that gives you correct page numbering.

Tony

PS If this answers your question, please go to
