CSV should be recognized without much problem. DId you simply try to open the file ? It should offer you to specify the column separator & various other settings.

Thanks,

The problem turned out to be that the text files had no suffix, i.e. the <.txt>. I renamed them to have it and Calc could <see> them for <insert as sheet>.

Appreciate the help.

The extension is just for the file browser to know what to propose you for each file. If you dont have any extension but you know what's the file content, you can still open Openoffice first, then in OpenOffice, click on the "open" option and open your file this way. It will still work without the extension I think. Most of the applications are a bit "smarter" and don't look only at the extension to know what a file is about.

But of course, it's always easier to just double click on a file to have it opened in the right directory ;)

Francois,

You're quite right. Almost all of the time Office opens whatever it is
with or without the extension. But every once in a while -- such as in
this instance, or in some others (maybe not even Office) that I can't
recall now, the extension is necessary.

Office works so well so much of the time that I get spoiled and forget
the little things. But that always seems to be the case with oo and
Ubuntu -- when something doesn't go right it's almost always something
so simple I've flown right over it.'

Thanks,
Gavin
