How can I add Greek spell checker to openoffice

Asked by Costas

I know that OpenOffice has language packs that allow you to work with two or more languages in the same document and have spell checking for both (at least I know this is available in the windows version).
Is it possible to install a Greek language speller?
Thank you
Costas

You should be able to install the complete Greek support by visiting

System/Administration/Language Support

There, you can tick on Greek and press Apply.

Subsequently,

If you want to use Ubuntu in Greek (full desktop), you need to log out (click System/Quit, choose Logout). Then, in the options, choose the Greek language and log in again.

If you want to continue using Ubuntu in English, you simply need to configure OpenOffice.org Writer that the default text is in Greek and it should use the Greek spell checker (not the English one). Click
Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languages
and under "Default language for documents" pick Greek.

Hello Simos, Gerco, thank you very much for the info. In the mean time last night just before going to bed, I somehow managed to start the Synaptic Package Manager, did a search for Greek and found numerous Greek dictionaries. I installed a few items (maybe more than what I need) and now I can spell check in openoffice.org in both languages. I must highlight and select Greek (if I am on English document) but that's OK, no problem.
One unrelated small question: I read the Ubuntu article that Skype is not supported and I understand the reasons. But I found Skype under the Synaptic Package Manager. Have things changed recently?
A million thanks to both of you
Costas

Hi,
Thanks for your comments.
For best results it is better to ask a separate question about the skype issue. (I do not know anything about it, and someone else who might know wil not find your question because of the summary and the packagename)
