how to have headings for each column in spreadsheet

i am using columns to prepare a list for mapping activities. so i want to have name given to each column so that i can refer to it easily and enter the data accordingly. i cannot scroll to the top of the page each time to see which column is for what kind of data

Just above the scrollbar there is a VERY small gap between the scrollbar and the first toolbar. Drag that down and you will have a split panel. If you only drag it down ONE row you will get a static header at the top. This functionality also exists in MS Office.

The suggestion above gives you a 'Split'. What I think you want is to 'Freeze' the headings row so it always shows at the top when you scroll down. So do this:

1. Click on cell A1to highlight it.

2. Do Window > Freeze.

Whichever cell you highlight in step 1 determines the rows and columns to be Frozen. For example, if you highlight C3, you get the top 2 rows and the first 2 columns Frozen.
