Opening Word 2003 documents now doesn't work.

Asked by M. Vernon

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer and I was able to open my Word 2003 docs, make changes, save, etc. using OpenOffice Word Processing. I took the plunge and downloaded & installed all 181 updates. Now I get only pages of code when I try to open docs.

Where would I get this info? From the 'About OpenOffice?'

When I entered lsb_release -a; uname -a; dpkg -l | grep openoffice, I got:

All i can recommend is log a bug or reinstall openoffice

sudo apt-get --purge remove openoffice.org*; sudo apt-get --purge autoremove; sudo apt-get install openoffice.org

removed and then re-installed openoffice. still the same.
I think my problem is with recognising the fonts on the word documents. I am having difficulty finding the fonts to install.

Have you installed ubuntu-restricted-extras? The package pulls down a lot of fonts.

Looks good but not sure how useful it is:

I finally re-installed Ubuntu 10.04 completely on my computer. Word 2003 now works fine. Thanks for the help.

A final note. This morning Update Manager prompted me to install a long list of updates on my computer. There may be some benefit to doing this but it was also the point where I lost the ability to access Word 2003 documents. Probably after an update is installed, there is no way to remove it.
