OpenLDAP, Ubuntu 12.04 and memberOf

Asked by Onno

Can it be done? Is there anyone who has succesfully used memberOf?

One could think that it is possible to use OpenLDAP, Ubuntu 12.04 and memberOf when accessing manual
man slapo-memberof. It shows the following information http://linux.die.net/man/5/slapo-memberof.

From carefully researching this option for around 5 hours or so, it seems that this is not working. And if it is working, documentation is most likely too outdated or non-existend to make succesful use of this functionality.

I tried all kinds of setups. I ended up with one user that has memberOf attribute as operational attribute. It also shows a group DN. This field however is no longer updated, so I can remove the user from the group and it will still show the old value.

My impression is that this is not production release code yet. If I need a directory with memberof support, what alternatives are there to using OpenLDAP?
